hi! i have a 91 yota 4x4. I was wondering if i could get some input on a problem im having with my truck. When i drive foward or backwards...my left rear tire seems like it gets caught on sometihng and then releases.... makin a jerking and a thud kinda sound. The faster i go, the faster the jerking and harder! it seems like its onli coming from the left rear tire. i can see the left rear tire jerk. I checked the drive shaft and axle. all seems to be ok outside, but im sure its something inside.

Sounds like it could be the brake drum sticking.

 

i found out wat the noise was. i towed my car to my mechanic and let him hear the sound. he said that i was probably a broken diff gear tooth. i drove the car SLOWLY across the street to my dad's shop and dumped the diff oil. After the oil was drained, i stuck my pinky up the drain hole and felt around. Loe and behold i found a chunk of metal, about 1/2"x1/2" floating around in there. I took a magnet on a stick and stuck it in the diff to see if i could fish the chunk out, but no luck.

 

Bummer dude let us know what becomes of it in case someone else has theses kind of symptons they will know where to start.

 

i took my rear diff out tonight. it took a lil while, quite easy though. So i got the diff out, took a look, and... AHHHHHH!!!! my r&p are shot! there are two huge chunks missing from the pinion (2 teeth) and the ring is all beat up. im PRAYING that my locker is A-OK and that none of that got chewed up.

Now, wat im hoping for is that my gears are stock (dunno if prev owners re geared it) and that i can get a 3rd member for cheap at a yard and just swap them. I'll put my locker in some other time. Im trying to find out wat the stock ratios are. I have a 91 yota ext cab picup, 4x4, v6. i looked, and the ring gear has markings that say "372". so we'll see wat happens.
