Hey its not about a yota but you guys are the most vehicle smart people i know of.

I am trying to fix the brakes on my Grandmas 1992 Chevy Astro van. Its AWD if that makes a difference. Anyways one day my Grandpa pulled in the driveway and the brakes pretty much vanished. Its been sitting a few months and i am finally getting around to looking at it. Today I looked at the master cylinder and it was dry. I put fluid in it and bled the brakes. The brake pedal feels funny. I wouldnt call it spongy, its hard to describe, more like there is no resistance when you push. There is absolutely no brake action until you are at the very bottom of the pedal. When you push it down it does not come back fast like it should. It slowly comes up, taking maybe 4 or 5 seconds to come all the way. Also i couldnt find anywhere that fluid may have leaked out.

Thats all i know after playing with it today.

Check for leaks at the front calipers. Also, check the rear wheel cylinders. Which tank in the master cylinder was dry, the front? rear? or both?

Also, check the back side of the master cylinder, where the linkage rod comes off the pedal and into the master cylinder. If there is any wetness back there, you'll need a new master cylinder. Usually the master cylinder is covered by a boot (on its rear end) that you'll need to take off.

Do these initial checks and get back to us.

is the system holding the fluid you put in...if it is not holding...then find the puddle and you find your problem......

 

Still sounds like air in the system. But if the master resivour was empty it is probably still leaking some where. Take some brakeclean spray and make sure all the bleeders and lines are dry. Keep pumping the pedal and double check for leaks. How low are the brake pads and shoes?

 

Both tanks were empty. They seem to be holding fluid now. I will check again tomorrow.
