Help With Fuel Mods In California
I'm new here and just got a trd s/c for my 1996 4x4 auto. I want to do everything right from the start (fuel, tranny mods,etc.). I searched and couldn't find any info related to fuel mods I can get away with in CA. I'm not concerned with legality, CARB and the like, b
ut I do want my truck to be able to pass a smog check. I've read about the URD and SMT 6 mods which address the lean problem but I don't know if they are adjustable to the point that I would still pass my smog (especially since this engine is a pretty high emission one to start out with). I would really appreciate any in depth responses.

Welcome and congrats on doing it right from the start! That's awesome. OK, now for your question(s). Yes, the SMT and the FTC will give you the flexibility you need to pass smog by simply backing off the fuel at certain places in the map. I really don't think you would have any trouble passing, even when dumping additional fuel in the mix...but to be on the safe side you should create a "Map B" on your SMT and switch over before smog to a leaner mix. Then switch back before you hit the road and smoke some ricers.
I really don't see the mods in my sig increasing emissions to the point of failure. Get the SMT and you will have a nice support group here on YT (Me, Mark, Johnny, etc).
Let us know!

Thanks. Nobody has been able to answer that for me until now. I would definately appreciate more insight but hopefully we can move to my newest post? " help with all the S/C questions..."

Well Green4skin'r, I think you'll be OK. My setup is similiar to what you are planning (including the bile green stock color). I passed the CA smog last year--my nox was a little high, but it still passed.
My biggest worry prior to the smog test was the visual inspection. I knew the SC would be OK, as I had the CARB cert for it. However, the stock injectors were black, and the ones in the URD kit are red. Also, new connectors for the new injectors were needed as part of the install. So, I painted the new injectors black, and tried to make the wiring to the connectors look as stock as possible. Finally, for the USB cable that is connected to the FTC, I made sure it was tucked well under the dash and out of sight.
The reason I did all this is because of stories I had heard of smog inspectors giving a real thorough inspection to modified vehicles, including taking a small mirror and looking at all the injectors. My rig is kind of a sleeper, so maybe that helped, but I was able to pass the visual no problem.
Hope the info helps, good luck with the project.
