I have a '99 4runner with 57000 miles that I purchased in April of this year and it has been making a knocking noise that sounds like it is in the motor since a month after I purchased it. After many, many trips to the dealership and $1600.00 later I am being told it is a trait of the vehicle and will continue to knock.

They have changed the water pump, harmonic balancer, pulleys, air compressor, timing belt, and other items that are small.

I am in a battle. Has anyone else had this problem?

 

I think what they are tellling you is complete BS. I cant believe you are being charged when the problem is not fixed!!! The knocking is not a "trait" of your vehicle. What crap! go to another mechanic.

Knocking or clattering?

I know that at least the earlier engines had a habit of a little bit of clattering, but knocking would be something more serious. May have to claim 'lemon' on that one. Sounds like someone may have run it low on oil for a while.

 

Why did you pay $1600 if you are still under the powertrain warranty?

After calling Customer relations at toyota I received papers today to begin Arbitration. Anyone ever had to do this?

Think I have a chance to get my money back on a vehicle I purchased in April and started having problems 1 month after I purchased it. I have been to the dealership 5 times and the warranty has paid out $1600 on the vehicle. It is a '99.
