Got my eye on a 73 FJ40

original straight-6 w/ 3 spd, nice orange paint with a new soft top. interior is in 8.5/10 condition. undercarriage is very clean. 255/75r15 tires that would need to be replaced in the next 6 months. i could probably get it just over $8k CDN. I would most likely need to sell the pickup though. opinions?

That's about $5K US, isn't it? Seems kinda steep but if it is in as good a condition as you say it would be worth it. The F series straight six is a bit of a slug though. Could always swap in a 3.4 and R151F or a SBC. Power increase combined with a weight loss is always good.

yah, i was talking to the seller today and before he opened the hood, i asked if he had swapped in a 350. he said that he didn't want to waste his time with that. apparently 350s get better gas mileage than the Fs and the power is beyond comparable. The Fs do go and go and go though.

If its nice then that is a good deal. Older FJs in good condition go for alot of $$ here in AZ.

The original motor will go forever...too bad it doesn't have power though.

I'd love to have an FJ40

I had a 1970 FJ40, those old Cruisers are tough as nails. It had a 327 Chev. 3 speed and a 2 speed auxiliary tranny. Mine had quite a bit of rust around and below the split tailgate....also brake work is rather expensive with the dual wheel cylinders. I always wanted to convert it to discs up front but never did, power steering would have been nice also, it takes a lot of room to turn around with the solid front axle. I gave about $3500 US when I bought mine (about 1980) and sold it for about $2500 in 1995.
