Good deal or rip off?

Hey all,
I bet this sort of thing has been asked here before, but I'd just like to get an idea of what you think of the truck I just bought for $1000.

1984 4x4 ExCab pickup - 22R, 5 speed. 277K miles. White paint, tan interior.

Pros: New 31" mud-terrain tires, new rear diff gears, new top end of engine. Rancho lift kit. Straight front axle, chrome rims, aluminum canopy. Power steering, factory tach, bucket seats.

Cons: Engine has a bottom end knock which I'll start tearing apart next week. Salvage title - was rolled at one point. Rough body - lots of small dents, holes where metal was pulled into shape on driver's side extended cab, LF fender junk, front bumper twisted.

So, the questions: Did I get ripped off, get a deal, or just average (I know that it's pretty subjective, just looking for opinions).

What kind of milage can I expect?

Does the tach, bucket seats, etc, indicate that it's an SR5 model? How do I tell?

Thanks!

It sounds average to me, I think you could have gotten it for 700-800 or so. Because the exterior is rough, it has that engine knock, and is high mileage.

22r's are solid engines though, so once you get that part figured out, you should be good for quite some time, especially if it had work done on it, supposing the work was done well.

Alot of people think that lifts and all the aftermarket goodies make it worth more for resale, but they usually don't add that much. Also, if it is lifted, why is it only running 31" tires? I thought stock was 31"??? Maybe they started that with gen 2?

Tires shouldn't matter though, because tires can also mean trying to cover up suspension/alignment problems.

Tires are worth 500 to the person who buys it, but when you sell, they only add like 100, unless they are 44inch boggers, then I can see them adding more.

Basically, I wouldn't regret the purchase. It sounds like this isn't your daily driver if you're going to tear into the engine, so have fun with a trail truck. Solid axled pickups have so much potential!

i was implying that in a worse case senario, if the truck was to be parted out, he should be easily able to make the $1000 back. A good buy in my eyes.

Wow, I forgot how fast people reply to posts on this board. I haven't posted here since I sold my '87 2WD truck - guess I need to update the sig...

I should have the engine rebuild done in the next week or two if I work on it on my lunch hours and after work (I work in an auto dealership shop). I'm actually planning on making this into a daily driver, despite the rough exterior. I was looking for a compromise between a 4x4 and a commutor, so this is what I found. I guess the price is whatever someone is willling to pay. Toyota 4x4s are like gold around here - even old beaters bring high prices!

I'm sure I'll be posting more often as I tear into this thing. Thanks!

I think it was a total rip off. But seeing as I am such a nice guy, I'll give you 950 for it so you're only out 50 bucks or so.

Seriously though, it sounds like a good beater to not worry about and just drive
