Getting a tow and auto tranny damage?

Hi, I have a 2002 Tacoma, 4x4, auto, double cab and my brother told me if I have it towed, even in neutral it will damage the tranny. He said it would be ok to tow it backwards, though?

I'm basically talking about if I get stuck out in the boonie and need to get pulled out of the mud or something.

What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Bill

You will be fine getting towed out of mud, What you dont want to do, is tow it a long distance, with a tow bar or dolly, especially not on the highway, if you do have to tow it that way, just disconnect the rear drive shaft....that eliminates the problem.

Or tow it backwards, but Team is right. Just getting pulled out of the mud is no problem. Its once you get up to road speeds where you have the problems.

I use AAA and would always have them bring a flat bed if I needed to be towed a long distance.

Thanks for the info.

So, what if I'm in a few miles on a rough dirt road, would it hurt my tranny to have some one tow me out?

Or better to disconnect the driveshaft?

Thanks
Bill
