you think 5.71 is low, there's a factory 6.17 that was available in countries like australia in certain trucks. as you can imagine, it's crazy weak(think there's only 5 pinion teeth)

I agree that not being able to use OD doesn't seem right. I ran 35s with 4.10s with the 3.dog with 210,000 miles on it, and while it wasn't fast, it still drove okay (relatively speaking.) 5th wouldn't pull anything resembling a hill or even a headwind, but I drove 75 on the freeway all the time. I ran 33s with 4.10s and a 22re for a while before I did the gears, and it too was perfectly driveable, just maddenly slow.

This just in, the question asker has a 3.4 so this is not cookie cutter.

5.71's have the same size and tooth count pinion as 5.29, where are they weaker?

Let's talk facts and not internet conjecture.

Third gen Runners run the same V6 gearsets as earlier V6 trucks/Runners. My '86 has a rear diff case off a '97 Runner w/ V6 gears.

I thought I already "conjectured" that above.

I have the 3rds being regeared now. They go in next week possibly. I'm paying $530 for labor for the 3rds getting regeared and ARB's. Someone's helping me put them in the vehicle

I'm paying 340 for just gear install this weekend with the axles in the vehicle. Usually if they're out of the vehicle they're cheaper.

Ok, I have run 4.88, 5.29 and 5.71 with the 3.0/auto/33s set-up and I liked the 5.71s the best. That being said, I am now running 5.29s with the thinking they will last longer than the 5.71s and will be better if I do a 3.4L swap. With the 5.71's I had great use of the auto OD gear with lots of power and a top speed of around 90 mph @ 4000 rpm, in a word, "perfect" to me. The 5.71s only lasted me about 40,000 miles before they needed to be replaced. They were Genuwine gears though, so who knows how long a good gear set would have lasted me.

Auto, 33's 3.0 and 5.29's for me. It is perfect now.

Starting another thread for other questions not related to the original topic gets your questioned answered and avoids confusing others.

I am hoping 4.56 will be ok since I can get those out of a wrecking yard for cheap and then upgrade my 4.10 diffs to 4.88.

What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Tell ya what I'll sell ya my 4.56's cheap when I upgrade to 5.29's. I won't have to pay much to have mine set up a case of beer and maybe $100. Ill be doing most of the work since I want the experience. The same guy setup a friend of mines taco and they have held up pretty good.

Kyle,Falmed,

I'm runnning a automatic. Are you guys talking about a stick. A 5 speed will handle the 5.29s great but with my automatic when I come to a small hill it downshifts. Especialy on the highway. hell I overheated my transmision and spuewed fluid all over the highway already from the automatic shifting in and out of overdrive. If I do not use overdrive the tire combination along with the 5.29 gears work great and with no overheating problems. Maybe I need some preformance mods. I have 210 psi in each cyclinder and 120,000 miles on the engine so there has got to be some potental there somewhere.

[QUOTE=Fever]Kyle,Falmed,

We've been jumping back and forth stick, auto, stick, auto.....3.4, 3.0, 3.4, 3.0..... the only thing that stayed constant is the 33 inch tires. Oh well that's the title of the thread.

Yes but he is asking about his rig on 33's.
I think 4.56's would be a great combo for your current setup with 33's.

Power mods?

I would think 5.29s would be perfect for 33s since a stock 4runner with 31s came with 4.88s (auto) if I remember correctly.

What power mods are you running?? I need more power!!!!!

5 speed and 33" tires

I am currently running 33 X 12.50's on my 93 w/ 3.0 and five speed. I have the stock 4.56 gears and I was surprised at how little difference there was in the 31 X 10.50's and 33 X 12.50's. I could tell a difference but not much at all. I still set my cruise at around 70mph or so (which is actually 74mph or so) I rarely ever notice any pull down on the hills. Of course, I don't live in the Rocky Mountains either. If you are going to do alot of highway driving I would suggest the 4.56s. If you are mostly in town and off road, I would suggest the 4.88 or maybe even the 5.29 but I think it would be overkill for the 5 speed. At highway speeds, the high rpms get on my nerves.

I guess it could also depend on how heavy your tire is going to be. If you are going to run a Bogger or something heavy would be a different story from the BFG ATs that are on my 4.

Overall, I am very pleased with my 33" / 4.56 combo and with the added power of the 3.4 swap, I think it would be great.
