Gear noise...

Hey all,

This might be completely normal, but I want to make sure before assuming. When driving my manual tranny 92, my 2nd gear makes a moaning noise whose pitch is directly related with the engine RPMs. As the RPMs drop, the pitch gets lower yet a little louder. It starts at around 2800 RPMs and disappears around 800 (idle). This only happens when there is no throttle being applied and it is still in gear. Any ideas?

BTW- What would make a 1st gear grind when shifting with the clutch totally in? This only happens when the engine is cold and it is difficult to shift gears.

This isn't really an answer to your question, but I have a bit of a whine in my tranny in most of the gears, it also changes pitch as the rmp's change, but I don't belive it's a moaning.. it more higher pitched than that.

Just thought I would throw that out there

Eric

Your second question sounds like a synchronizer wearing out. The first one is not normal. Since you have 2 issues it may be worth it to take it to a tranny shop and have it rebuilt. If it was only one problem i'd say just ride it out.

Make sure you have plenty of clean gear oil in there.

The grinding has only happened a few times and could be something I have done. The noise is freaking annoying. You can hear the "screaming" over the stereo. I just put in the clutch instead of using engine braking while in 2nd gear. I'll take it somewhere and have it looked at.

Thanks all.

Your 1st gear issue could also be a bad pilot bearing or throwout bearing on the clutch. If you are unsure how old your clutch is have it done while they have the tranny out. Best (and cheaper on labor charges) to get everything working right all at once instead of doing the tranny job now and the clutch in a year or so. Don't let them double charge you on the labor though. Get written estimates up front.
