Gear indicator and reverse lights not working
I've got a '98 Tacoma 2wd automatic. The gear indicator on the dash doesn't work and neither do the reverse lights. Both were like this when I got the truck, so I don't know if they started at the same time, but they seem related to me.
Any ideas what could cause this??

Sounds like a PRNDL switch aka transmission range switch. I'm not at all familiar with your yota, but this switch is probably on the side of your transmission. Technically speaking, it could be anywhere in line with the movement of the shifter linkage.
No obd II codes set?

You know...I haven't had the codes checked yet, but it hasn't set the cel yet. I guess that would be a good start.
I looked around a bit for the PRNDL switch, but couldn't find it. I've got the steering column housing off and there's no sign of it there. I looked on the side of the transmission where the linkage goes, but it's not there either. There is one sensor on that side of the tranny; it's farther back, toward the driveshaft, and looks like maybe a two-wire connector.
I suppose I should do some more looking...
