It should sound a bit louder than stock. Opening up the intake box (or cutting a hole in it) will create a louder sound at WOT. Also, like he said, I will never use K&N "filters" again.

 

Marvel Mystery Oil is a great lubricant. I wouldn't say it is horrible. But it cleans fuel systems VERY well and also breaks loose seized engines also.

 

What did K&N filters do or not do to you?

I haven't really opened up the throtle. I don't really want to waste the gas. I'll have to try it sometime though.

out of curiosity, how do you know? we all know BG's44k works very well and it has proof that it does. same with GM top end cleaner. but i have never seen proof that marvel cleans anything.

 

oiled K&N filters eventually dirty up your intake system bc the oil that you put on the filter does get sucked through and cakes itself in the intake. plus it dirties your MAF sensor. you will see, keep running the K&N.. before too long you will be back here asking about code this and code that and or how to clean the intake system.. i have used K&N's before i know first hand. wont use them ever again.. use paper filters. much cleaner.

 

oiled filters are best for racing where you tear down the motor all the time,
don't have emissions equipment, and don't worry about engine wear 'cuz you are always replacing rings anyway. all you want is to keep out squirrels

they are no good for a 1996 + FI street vehicle

 

I wouldn't take car advice from someone at Lowes. That's like asking for home improvement advice from a restaurant waiter.

You shouldn't need anything but the occassional injector cleaner if you keep things in a good state of tune.

I have a friend with an old Mazda 323 that had a sticking valve. We dumped Marvel's throughout that car it did some good. But that thing was so beat up we could run a stick of butter through the system and it would have made it work better. From what I've heard, Marvel's is automatic tranny fluid. The high level of detergents in auto tranny fluid are what cleans up deposits and such.

17 mpg around town is about what you can expect.

Thanks for the last bit of advice. I didn't go into Lowe's looking for advice for gas milage, he just hapened to give me the information when I told him what kind of vehicle I had.

Your also saying that the K&N won't be too bad for my car? I might just have to add some injector cleaner sometime?

 

I'm not making a comment on the K&N. I don't think they offer any benefit and risk letting dust into the engine. But the issue of air filters is almost as religious as oil brand preferences.

If it were my 4Runner, I'd pull the K&N out.

Just fyi the gas tank guage isn't very accurate...I'll get 100 miles to the first quarter tank of gas then only 50 out of the second quarter so you can't really judge it off of that...and on the K&N filter subject, I've been running one for over two years and no problems, the people that get the build up in their intake must clean it and oil it like they change their oil or put way too much oil on cause I have zero build up on the intake or MAF sensor...
