Why is it some 3.0 guys claim 19 - 22mpg and others claim no more than 15mpg bone stock and this is in the city? Do these engines vary that much or does their math suck somewhere?

With my 3.4 2WD I got 22+mpg on my last vacation trip. I think the 99 4WD I had was around 18-19mpg.

It's funny to hear someone ask that. I never drove my 4Runner w/ stock tires. My g/f drove it from the dealership to the closest tire store (about a quarter of a mile away), and we swapped the tires from my Tundra onto the 4Runner. Been modding away ever since...

BTW, I get 16.5 corrected MPG all in-town driving. If I BABY it on the hwy, I get 17-18.

15.5 flat when driven hard or lot of AC or 4wd being used but sometimes with a little more highway time but still mostly city driving I get 17 with an occasional freak tank of over 18mpg.

It hasn't been on a highway trip so I have no idea on those numbers.

Sorry if this is a bit overkill, but it will give you a good idea of gas-milage. This is all based on a 1998 Toyota 4Runner with the 3.4L V6 engine and an automatic 4-speed transmission. There are no big mods on it either except the use of Mobil -1 Full Synthetic motor oil.

All the results are a mix of city and highway driving, except the "off-road" entries of course. I hope this helped!

Man,I thought 16 flat was bad in mine and I know mine needs new plugs and a tuneup and I've never gotten below 15.5 with city driving and I have the next size tires over stock.

Yeah, I also have the 'optional' size tires on mine: P265/70R16.

I also have the feeling mine is a bit on the low side, especially since I don't have a service history on it from the previous owner. Kind of looking forward to the complete tune-up I am going to do to see how it will affect my milage...

My friend is getting around 21-23 mpg on his 2003 4Runner V6 automatic. Most of his driving is highway to work and back with some traffic lights mixed in.

That's also a whole different engine than the 3.4 and it gets better gas mileage and has more ponies.

The Toyota standard size for 3rd gen 4Runners is 225/75/15 while the optional size is 265/70/16 (which is what I am running).

I guess you could (and people do) run 265/75/16 (31.64" diameter) and I have even seen 33 inch diameter mud tires, but all that is already going over recommended specs because it could cause brake failure.

Anyways, I guess the point I am trying to make is that 265/75/16 can't be the next size up, since Toyota wouldn't recommend an optional size that could cause safety hazards.

Correct your odometer:

I think that most of you are getting better mpg than you think. My 99 3.4l 4wd with 30" tires needs a 4.5% correction to the odometer. I use to think I got 17-20 when actually I get 18-21 and sometimes in the mountains 22-23. Using the mile markers, I drove 100 miles and the odometer only said 95.7.

How could that cause brake "failure?"
