Fuel Mileage???
#21
The truck is bone dry there is nothing in it, except a few socket sets in the cab, 2 tow ropes and a couple of hitches.
My engine RPM's never go above 2500, city driving acceleration is about 2200, crusing around 1500. Highway RPM's @50mph about 1700.
Although running the premium gas (91 octane) It has improved and I've always known that as a highway truck it gets great mileage, usually about 400 miles per fill.
Oh and for those guys that keep asking what's my MPG, if i'm getting 200 miles per tank and the tank is about 18 gallons, then using math it figures out to be about 10-11 MPG. (sorry not trying to be snarky).
Went out of town tonight, currently sitting at 1/2 tank and got 175 miles on it. So again hhighway mileage I have no issues with, jusst every day city driving is the problem.

Clean your MAF sensor
Pull it out and clean it. 10 minute job and you've got nothing to loose.
Do a search to find the proper way to do it (clean the bulb and the wires in the throat)
My rig was getting bad MPG with no codes and this really helped.
Let us know if it made a difference.

10 -12 mpg sounds about what I get in my 10 mile round trip stopping and starting 5 or 6 times
I have bad luck Cleaning Mass Air flow sensors I have learned my lesson it is cheaper to just put in a new one for me

Ok so i may have just screwed myself. I removed and cleaned it all , but lost one of the screws that hold the MAF sensor in place. Tried replacing it with another screw and it was the wrong size and now I can't get it out or in. MAF Sensor housing is part of the airbox, so i guess I need to order a new airbox and MAF sensor. (RockAuto) US prices are far lower than CDN prices. they want $1200 for box and sensor. US $400 with overnight shipping.
So what kinda damage can I cause running my vehicle for a couple of days with a partially seated MAF sensor?

Unfortunately no. used parts around here are non existent. I ordered the parts for arrival by Tuesday. I got duct tape holding the one side tight atm. That should do until I get the new parts.

Well I replaced the MAF sensor and the airbox and new air filter. I've increased my gas mileage by about 40 miles. so I'm getting about 240 miles to the tank now. running low grade 89 octane.

Once again 240 miles per tank doesn't really mean anything. You can filling up at different levels of "emptiness". The gas gauge is a reasonable guess not a measurement. You have to calculate you gas mileage. Miles traveled by gallons consumed. Glad you feel like it's doing better though. Placebo is worth a lot towards piece of mind

WpgWelder,
Okay, so you started out in your first post as getting 200.00 miles per tank of gas in your Tacoma. I agree with vasinvictor about different levels of emptiness in your Tacoma's gas tank so you probably did not run your Tacoma's fuel tank bone dry before filling up the tank with fuel again when you were getting 200.0 miles per tank of gasoline. For a rough guess, you most likely filled up the tank when you still had about a gallon of fuel left in the tank so this means that 200.00 divided by 17.00 gallons of fuel equates to about 11.75 Miles Per Gallon. This, indeed, is pretty hideous gas mileage.
Now, after doing quite a bit of work on your Tacoma, your Tacoma is getting 240.00 miles per tank of gasoline. This equates to about 14.11 Miles Per Gallon. Your Tacoma is definitely improving in its fuel consumption with the work you are doing. It has made a 17% improvement since you started this post.
I looked at some of my old tests when I was testing the gas mileage on our Tacoma. The latest one, which was back in 2014, it got 262.00 miles per tank. This means it got 17.35 Miles Per Gallon. This is about the gas mileage these 3.4 Liter V6 Tacomas get depending on how they are loaded and how they are used.
Remember when doing your tests calculate the mileage between the fill ups, and calculate the exact amount of fuel consumed between the fill ups. Don't use the capacity of the fuel tank as one of your variables.
Good Luck!

ok well my driving habits are conservative. As for keeping track of how many gallons, when i fill up, it's usually btwn 60-70 litres. (15.85-18.49 gallons). Premium octane is too damn expensive up here. $1.30/litre something along thoses lines. ($4.92/gallon). So I put in 89 octane which is currently sitting at $0.97/litre.I always fill up around the 1/8 thank mark on the fuel gauge. (due to gas prices)

WPG Welder,
Remember these Toyota 5VZ-FE 3.4 Liter V6 Engines have a compression ratio of 9.6 to 1 so running them on unleaded fuel with an 87 Octane rating is not going to hurt them. I would not run them on any unleaded fuel lower than an 87 Octane rating, though. I don't know enough about the Canadian's gasoline choices to advise you any further.
The next thing I would start examining on your Tacoma is exhaust and emissions. I would also look at your transmission's shift points. This, however, is probably not going to be the culprit because you would of noticed something wrong by now. The other thing that I would check is your electronic locking rear differential. I would make sure it is unengaged. Although, you probably would of noticed this as well if it was not functioning properly.
I will try to do a fuel mileage test with our Tacoma in the next few weeks to give you a bench mark of what your Tacoma should be getting. Keep in mind, though, our Tacoma is not a daily driver. It is our family's work truck, and it is used for work 90% of the time we use it. It is always hauling or towing something. It is rare we use it with it being completely naked. On the occasions I do take it fishing, I don't use the four wheel drive continuously on the logging roads. I use four wheel drive only when necessary, which makes a huge difference in how much fuel it consumes. You probably have snow a good portion of the winter where you need to be in four wheel drive all of the time. They are going to consume more fuel in four wheel drive. I am sure you probably already know this.
Our Tacoma also has a 5-Speed manual transmission, which gets a little worse gas mileage than its automatic counterpart. This difference is only 1.00 mile per gallon according to the U.S. Department of Energy's test results.
The U.S. Department of Energy's test results list the manual as getting between 15-18 miles per gallon. They list the same results for the automatic. The automatic gets 1.00 mile per gallon better in combined city and highway driving.
Good Luck!

That's getting better!
On the highway I can get about 300-320 miles out of a tank. Mixed driving I'll get under 300. I get the mileage you're currently getting when I tow my 17' trailer. So still not great...but you're getting better.
