Front studs shorter than back studs on 04 taco

I got some new wheels put on my 2004 xcab tacoma last night. I put on some LC 80 wheels. Anyways after putting them on the tech called me into the shop and showed me that my front studs are about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch shorter than the rear studs. therefore the lug nuts could not even turn on far enough to reach the tip of the stud. That make sense???? I never noticed this before but I was always using the large Toyota lug nuts that have a closed front to them. Now that im using a generic conical lug nut i can clearly see that the front lugs are shorter. I got about 75% of the lug nut to "bite" on the lug but it worries me a little that the whole thing is not "grabbing". Again the back is fine and the whole lug nut is over the stud. But the front is not going on the whole way.

Anybody else ever notice this? I think it will be fine but it just struck me as odd. I guess I could get all 12 front studs replaced with slightly longer ones. Thoughts?

That's good to know. I have some LC 80 wheels i got for my 2000 4runner. The rims had the black inserts in the lug holes so I had to buy the cheap conical lugs myself. I will have to keep that in mind when I change mine. I'm waiting on tires at the moment.

I'm thinking that maybe the extended thread lug nuts that All Pro sells may be the ticket to fix this.

Your lug nuts are hollow on the end? Mine are closed on the end so I can't tell how far mine are going in. They are seated and get tight so I think they are going to work. I'd run them for a few miles and just double check em.

Correct. The ones I am currently running are hollow on the end so i can see that the nut is not completely "on" the stud.

So i went ahead and ordered 24 extended thread lug nuts from all pro. But when i went to install them the "extended" part of the lug nut does not fit through the lug hole in the wheel itself. I wrote an email to Allpro and they recommend that i drill the holes in the wheel a little bigger. they claim that it will not affect the shape of the conical seat on the wheel. however the wheels i have came with steel inserts inside the lug holes on the wheel. If i drill these out (and the holes only need to be ever so slightly bigger) can i just do it with a hand drill? Will it ruin the steel inserts inside the wheel? Or... Should i just leave it alone and deal with the less than desirable lug thread engagement?

I would be a little leary about drilling any rim. I'm getting my landcruiser wheels mounted today so i will see what my wheel guy says about my conical lug situation.

Well I got my LC wheels put on my 98 4runner today. I asked the guy about longer and shorter studs front and rear. So we looked and they were pretty close to the same length. I bought the conical set from Advance Auto and worked great for mine LC wheels. Here they are in their glory. haha Sorry for the Garage pic. Its dark here at 5.
