front hub cone washers
besides cursing at them whats the trick to getting toyota cone washers off the front hub i've tried pb blaster tapered punch they wont move been fighting them for 2 hrs got 3 off mangled 2 beyond recognition

First let the PB Blaster soak a little. Then hit the side of the hub or flange with a hammer right where the cone washer is. Screw the lug nut on part of the way so that the cone washer doesn't fly across the room when it pops off. It's that easy.
When you put them back on make sure you liberally coat them with anti-seize.

I have yet to find *one* technique that works all the time on every cone washer, so if one way fails, try something different.

I have found that with a air hammer with a flat punch And the nut on (very imporant) they come off with 1 or 2 taps. Make sure the nut is flush with stud. If you dont have a good trigger finger, use a peice of steal so you don't damage anything treads.

I use a small cold chisel and hammer and tap sharply but not too hard right at the edge where the cone washer is stuck in the flange, couple taps one side then a couple the other side - pop right off and fly across the room. Just Saturday I did this when I pulled my axles. I've never gotten one loose hitting the edge of the flange or the stud.

LoL it took me an entire Day to remove cone washers the first time i tried. YES AN ENTIRE DAY. from 12noon to light 8 at night i let the washers soak in PB Blaster and worked on the driver side wheel first and got the washers off then the passenger side was being a real pain so i ignored it and soaked it for 4 hours and tried again.
I went to NAPA and bought a brass hammer and all 6 on the passenger side were out within 1 minute of banging the stud,hub and everything near it. I was so pissed it took me from 12 noon to 6 pm to get the driver side out fully.
Now whenever I need to take em out again I use my brass hammer and all 12 are out within 5 minutes.
Use a brass hammer, it may be a little spendy like mine which was 45 bucks but It was well worth it especially because i use it to bang out anything on my 4runner.
Maybe its time to make a tech write up for cone washer removal LoL.

I have seen the hub flanges simply beat to death with that method, don't do it that way. The FSM says to tap the bolts on their ends with a brass rod, but I've never tried that. Tapping them on the sides sharply but not hard enough to damage them with a chisel works like a snap and doesn't beat up the hub.

Usually never need to hit the side of the hub, either the small screwdriver ot the brass drift work for me. But yes, if you do smack the side of the hub, don't do so hard enough to damage it. If you do have to hit it that hard, try another technique.

I use a brass hammer, however I tried this: this weekend on a 92 that had never had the hubs off worked like a champ!
I took a cold chisle with a 5/8 inch wide blade, i put the tip of the blade right on the gasket between the hub and rotor hat, right over the offending washer and angled the back end of the chisel towards the center of the axle, one tap with a dead blow or brass hammer, and the cones, backed out. Caution the cones may actually shoot off!
this left no damage to the hub, flange or gasket!
worked faster than anything else I have tried

i used the brass hammer and beat the studs and didnt care about the ADD hub because im replacing it with Aisin hubs but it didnt even damage the ADD hub. I notice the ADD hub was already dented at the points where all the cone washers are and figured the previous owner must have done it or the repair shop i took the 4runner to 2 years ago did it.
But like i said a brass hammer and hitting all the studs in a circular pattern then hitting the edge of the hub and they all came out in less then a minute.
