front diff breather (3rd gen)

Hi,

Can the front diff breather on a 3rd gen 4Runner be removed and reinstalled? I'm thinking of cleaning the breather as it is possible it's clogged and could be the culprit for the leak in the front diff.

Thanks.

Yes. It is in kind of an awkward position to get to but you can do it.

Isn't the front diff on a 3rd gen extended up high? I know mine is...

The _rear_ breather is a pain to get to...

Yes, the filter-breather is somewhere to the back (but a bit lower) of the driver side battery.

Thanks guys!

Hi,

When I removed the breather cap, I didn't see any filter. I was expecting to see a small filter at the tip. All I saw was just a 2-3 mm Ø hole. So I just cleaned the cap and reinstalled it.

Is there really no filter and what i saw was normal?

Thanks again!

There isn't a filter just a cap similar to the one on the rear housing. The difference is the rear is threaded and the front just slips into the hose. I just blew some air through the front cap to make sure there weren't any obstructions and called it good.
