get a 4x4

but to make it trail worthy, a locker or posi of some sort is the best bet you'll have for a 2wd. 31s aren't too hard to fit, crank your torsion bars in the front and get an add-a-leaf or longer shackles for the back. anything more and it's fender hacking time if you want to go with 31s, you'll probably want to regear the axle at the same time to a little better ratio like 4.10 or 4.30(since you most likely have 3.42, 3.54 or 3.73 gears). it'll help make up for some lost power. also at that time you can have a locker or posi installed with probably no additional charge(other than the price of the unit).

think of it this way: you have half as much work to do as a 4x4 guy would, since you only have 1 axle sure it won't be able to go all the same places as a 4x4 would but you'll still be able to have a lot of fun with it

Thanks i was thinking 31's with a locker. would a three inch lift be to much? By the way it has a 4.10 gear and a differant trans, The origanal owner is an older church going man so i belive what he said was he took the 4 speed out and put 4.10 gears and a 5 speed in it. So you think i just need some good tires and locker.. I like the 2by4 look i just cant locate a good source for front bumper maybe put two KC lights on itand a roll bar.

The "best" locker for street use would be an ARB. However, they are also the most expensive and I'm not even sure they make them for 7½" rears. If you really want a locker but are on a budget, you're pretty much limited to the various drop-in lockers like Lock-Rite, Detroit EZ locker or Aussie.

yup, the ARB is a pricey one. they DO make them for the 7.5 differential(same as the front of an '86-up truck) another option(if you don't mind doing some work) is to get a 1 ton 2wd axle housing with the 8", and retrofit a toyota electric locker into it.

personally, i think i'd be mostly happy with a limited slip rear. you can find them in some '82-85 supras that will fit your axle, or you can go the truetrac route

i would get a lcoker thats what im planning for my truck... check out my avatar and link... im running 31s right now, and its a good hieght... i do have a lot of lift though... 3" body and 4" lift spindles in fornt with 2" shackles out back..... the 31s still ahve problems with rubbing while offroading.... i still had to do the fenderwell lip mod and modify the rearmost part of the fender to fit those 31s..... click the link in my pic to see more of my truck....
