Extending Differential Breathers
I am going to go ahead & extend my differential breathers maybe today. I was wondering if all I need to do is to unscrew the old ones & replace w/ the extension pieces I have read about on the post? Is it really that easy?
Thanks

it was the easiest mod ive done. the hardest part was lining it in place with the frame... and i ran mine to the engine bay.... and i had to get it through some tight spaces.

Be sure to periodically check your extended breathers to make sure they are still breathing. More tubing means more places for gunk to get trapped in the line. If it stops breathing, you are likely to blow axle seals, so it's a good idea to check them once in a blue moon... just in case.

That's the exact reason I am glad I found this forum. I have learned a lot here. I once had a friend tell me to pack everything I could w/ marine grease. I have it everywhere but in the differentials I am sure that it has helped me out. With Kayak season around the corner I figured it would be the first thing on my list to do. I ordered the parts from the dealer today & will be putting them on tomorrow afternoon once they arrive.
BajaTaco, Thanks for the tip on checking the lines. See that's something else I would not have known to do.

what I can't believe is that Toyota doesn't makes this a standard on the trucks and suv's. I know they want to keep you as far away from wheeling before the waranty is up but they could throw in a couple extra dollars to extend the breathers so we wouldn't have to worry about it because like ATC pointed out, most people don't know that it should be done until it is too late or acutally never find out and keep wondering why they blow seals and stuff. I know I had no idea the diff's even had breathers until I got online and started learning stuff. something like that is so easy for the car maker to incorporate. I know I've accidentally dunk my diff's and had to change the fluids. I've stayed away from the deep holes lately because I'm too lazy to do this cheap and easy mod. can you believe that? I would pull the axle and press bearings and change seals but I'm too lazy to do this. sheeez!!!!
