My SURF has started to smoke excessively. It is a turbo diesel engin and I think it may be diesel smoke. The smoke is black and it almost seems like when the choke is up in a gas engine. Is there a simple way to adjujst the pump? Like how you would do in a caburetor engine.
Help!!

 

If you're not already ahead of me, check your oil. It may not be diesel that you're burning.

I'll check my diesel book tonight and see how to adjust the injection pump.

 

Thanks but I did check the oil. There is a backpressure, that is, smoke is comming up through the hose that leaves the tappet cover and connects to the turbo. There is also a lot of oil in that arera generally, may be comming up through the dipstick??? However, the excessive smoke is thick and black and the diesel level is dropping faster than normal while the engine oil level remains the same. A friend told me to add 2 quarts of kerosene to the diesel and that is a way to clean the injectors. I just tried that but after I drive it tomorrow I'll know the difference. I do need to know how to adjust the pump, since I think that is where the problem is.

 

According to the manual (Gregory's automotive for the 2.4 2L and 2.8 3L), possible causes are:

1. Blocked air cleaner element.
2. Faulty injectors.
3. Advanced injection pump timing.
4. Faulty injection pump.
5. Insufficient engine compression.

if you're getting a lot of pressure through the valve covers, you probably ought to get a compression test. I'd bet a dollar to a donut you're gonna need at least a ring job.

There are only instructions for removal of the injection pump and adjustment of the idle speed. No adjustments for the amount of diesel injected, which is the same as my old VW diesel.
