engine swap

just looking for verification that there are no major differences between and 88 2wd 22r motor, and an 87 4wd 22r motor.

the 4x4 has a bad head gasket, and i want to swap the 88's engine in to it.

so far as i can tell the only visible difference is the oil pan, consequently i figure i'm gonna have to change the oil pump pickup too. which is no big deal.

both trucks are manual trans. the 88 is a 4 spd, and the 87 is a 5 spd. are the clutches the same? reason i ask is the 88 has a fairly new clutch(15,000miles)

also the 88 has smog equipment and the 87 does not, will this be an issue?

my goal here is to do this in a weekend with a helper. so i don't have to drive the on road play toy to much, (horrible gas mileage) not to mention snow in the forecast.

thanks in advance

Yep, it will swap no problem.i've done it and all i had to chage was oil pan and pickup.i left the clutch on it as well.did it in one day i dont know about the smog equipment, pull the 87 and set it next to the 88 and take off or swap what you have to to get rid of the smog stuff.Have Fun
