Hey everyone, for those of you who know what’s going on I have started work again on my Runner. For those of you who don’t, you can view my previous thread here. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/new-engine-yes-no-27779/
I need help! We’ve gotten to the point where we should be able to pull the engine, but something is holding it. We only looked for about 30 mins before we decided to call it a day (we had already worked on it for 5 hours). The book we have tells us we have to remove the transmission!! Can we remove the engine without removing the transmission?!?! This seems impossible! I will be working on it all day and posting any updates and pictures at night. If any of you have suggestions or tips, post them here! Thanks.

Not sure what you are stuck on.....did the tranny and engine separate yet?

Separate? Are they supposed to? At this point the book has instructed us to remove the two as a whole. We'll be working on it again tomorrow. I have to take a break from it though to paint my bike. My girly wants it to look nice. I'll post pics of that too.

If you pull it as one piece they need to tip quite a bit to come out.
The tranny tail is quite long off the back of the engine.
I am pretty sure you can pull the motor without pulling the tranny.

Here is a pic of a swap with a 3.4L but yours should eb the same deal.

That's all I get from the Yota Techs? I thought this was a tech section... 2 replies for an engine and 30 for someone wanting to know how to paint light bulbs!?!?!? Come on, you guys can do better than that!

you need to pull the engine forward because the tranny out put shaft is still connected to the fly wheel. Also, make sure that you got all the bolts that connect the tranny to the engine. Oh, and make sure to support the tranny with a jack or something like that.

Well, MTL pretty much hit the nail on the head - the engine and transmission are bolted together and you will have to either separate them or pull them both out (which means you will have to disconnect everything else from the transmission). I would think that pulling them both off would be quite tricky, as the two pieces together will be quite large and bulky and I'm sure you'll run into clearance issues.

Disconnecting the transmission from the engine (on my '96) isn't difficult, there were 6 bolts - some of them were a little tricky to find, but once found, none were really hard to remove.

Hello,

I am right where you are at with my swap. On mine I had to remove the fuel injection air intake chamber so I could disconnect the engine wiring harness.
A plug between the motor and body would be nice. Toyota!

I am going to leave the transmission in place and just remove the motor.

Question: Does the starter have to come off to seperate the motor and transmission? It is so tight in there I can not tell. Even with the access cover removed.

Oh man, I have no idea about the starter. At what stage are you in right now? Tomorrow I'll be disconnectting the trans.

yup, i pulled the trans then the motor.

Disreguard!!! this was how we pulled a 1st gen....shop manual says pull eng/trany complete, but I know it has been done separately

This was a 89 3.0 4Runner
Yes the starter has to come off.
Disconnect the fuel lines and the electrical wiring
disconnect the exhaust pipe
Remove all the bolts from between the engine and trans
Disconnect the motor mounts
You have to raise the front of the engine slightly then slide it towards the front. Might want to support the trans with a floor jack if you have one.
The engine/trans might be stuck together with rust in the alignment dowel pins (slight careful prybar action sometimes helps)

Do you have a manual or automatic? If a manual, you need to remove the starter, the bolts that hold the trans to the engine, if an automatic you also have to remove the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel.

You don't need to remove the trans....

Hello,

I have everything unbolted except for the top two bolts that join the bellhousing and engine. They are hard to get to. How do I get to them.

Mine is a 1994 4runner, same color as yours.

From this thread, it looks like I need to remove the starter as well.
I will get on that.

You want a collection of deep sockets (14 mm i think?) and some extenstions, it's a pain the the butt, but it can be done, because I did it.

Use about a 2' extension with a swivel joint on the end. It helps to take the rear mount off of the tranny (or t-case) and lower the rear a little so you can get up in there between the bell housing and the firewall.

And for the original post, this should do it. You don't have to take them out together. You don't pull the engine to put a clutch in.

I'm not sure I recognize the new engine.

Is that a 3.0 or a 3.4? Or is it something else?
