electrical problems

ok heres the problems. i did a search on alternator and found lots of good info.

my car died last night while going to the mall. the tow truck came but as he was coming i fidled with the batt (-) connection, took it off and jammed it back on and as the tow guy pulled up it started. as he was leaving my car died again.

so i called the tow truck again! and he jumped it and as he left and i tried to leave it died again.

so i called AGAIN and he came and charged my batt a bit, and then connected those portable jumpers to my car, lowered my hood, and i followed behind him to my g/f's house nearby (i live 30miles away from where i was). it ran fine. im sure its coz of the charge and the portable jumper.

so i did some research and came up with a few things.

1. batt dead
2. BAD connections
3. alternator

i have to get a ride down to my gfs house and work on my car, and its CHRISTMAS EVE!

if the alternator is bad and not charging, my dash light would indicate that no?

so im just going to buy an alternator down here coz its cheaper, bring it to my gfs house, CLEAN the batt posts and try to drive it or take out the batt and get it tested at autozone, if the batt is good, then drive it to autozone to get the alternator tested and then replace the alternator if needed. otherwise ill have an extra alternator lying around.
