How many of you run your rig on ECT most of the time? As I have mentioned before, my father has a 99' and says that he always leaves the ECT in power mode. I have to admit, I like driving the truck a lot better in ECT mode than I do without it. If gas mileage is the only thing that it really buys me, I think I will leave ECT on for tooling around town with, and turn it off for highway driving.

What do you all think? Keep in mind that I am still breaking my truck in. I have not floored it once and have been keeping it cool with my top speeds. I really must say that I have been very happy with the truck's performance so far, even with babying it I can tell it wants to move.

 

I run my truck with ECT on most of the time. I personally haven't noticed any gain in gas mileage, if anything I think it lowers my gas mileage, because when I experiment around with driving around without it on, and with it on, I seem to go through a tank of gas faster with it on. I've found that my truck definitely drives a lot better with ECT on than it does with it off.

Right, what I was trying to say that by having ECT off, you will conserve gas. :pat:

 

I drove with it on for a while and it seemed to affect the gas mileage a good bit. I did not write down the numbers, but the truck definitely sucked up alot more gas, alot quicker. It makes a slight "seat of the pants" difference, but I don't think it's enough to justify the extra cash at the gas pump.

I drive with mine engaged all the time for the extra pep.

I turn it off only when on the freeway, then it's back on again when I hit the off ramp to come into town.

 

I've never tried it.....I thought I read somewhere in the manual to drive with it "off"....???

 

Guys, by leaving the ECT on you are allowing your rig to shift at higher RPM's, so you are going to use more gas. Haha, and since your rig is going to seem like it is faster, you are going to drive it like it is faster!

 

I leave mine off all the time. All it does is shift at a higher RPM. When I need more power, I just put my foot to the floor. With the supercharger, the party really gets started when the pedal drops.

 

Is that all it does? I know all it does is change the shift mapping, but does it also drop the downshift points? In my previous car it did that so a downshift was almost instant. I have noticed it really takes a good stab for the runner to kick down...

and use fresh air & a/c mix. It also saves
gas.

 

Please explain why you think A/C and fresh air setting saves gas. I would have thought the recirc setting would save more gas as the compressor would not have to kick in as much as it would when trying to cool the "fresh" hot outside air. Thx.

 

I think A/C in general is bad for your gas mileage.

 

Driving with your e-brake on is probably bad for your gas mileage too. Or having your hood open.

 

Any car will use more gas and get worse gas mileage if you run your A/C all the time.

 

We leave ours set at 77 deg year round.

I tried the ECT thing with my truck and found that going up an overpass with ECT off, I would go into about 2 lbs boost by about 2/3 the way up, then brop back into vacuum. With ECT on it would only go to about '0' and then back into vacuum. And it did not downshift in either instance. That leads me to believe it also changes the fuel map.

So, I decided to run it with ECT on for a couple of tanks of gas and the ECU must have adapted because it went back to the 2/3 way up boost condition, and still no downshift.

So I turned it off...

Your were right. I tried driving with the e-brake on and the hood open at the same time and DAMN I got lousy gas mileage.

 

My husband said the same thing about the a/c & fresh air setting. But I think
the compressor runs most of the time to
cool down the inside air.

Anyway the manual suggested only recirc
for the first few minutes and crack the
windows open to let out the hot air. And
use fresh air & a/c setting the rest of the
time.

 

yeah, A/C on, ebrake on, and hood open doesn't help your gas mileage.. i dont think. .. or wait, maybe it gives you 500 HP. gonna have to drive like that all the time now!:pat:

 

well i drive with the ect on all the time and if i dont drive hard then the tranny cahnges at the same settings but if i drive a bit agressivly it holds the gear for longer and i seem to think that i get better gas milage with it on?
This is going to need a lot of looking in to to get to the bottom of it, i have always been too scared of the numbers to find out what i am really dooing to the gallon.:eek:
