i've got the xtra-visions which are a little cheaper and worth every buck. they're just below the silverstars. very satisfied with the whiteness

The yellow light helps with depth perception and are much easier on the eyes helping with driver fatigue.

As I recall the Risi Competizione F430 uses an HID lamp but it's covered with a yellow Laminx type material...

A Blue(r) light provides much sharper detail but can hamper depth perception and at extremes night vision too (basically the area outside the edges of lamp coverage will seem much darker by comparison at a certain temperature color)

If I find the article study I will post it, it goes into more info on eye mechanics and how different colors of light make the eye do different things...

installed mine today, not as whitish of a light as i hoped for but the lights make it almost look like daytime outside. really good bulbs but dosen't really do much for the cool factor, but i guess its better to see at night then look cool on the streets.

 

True! It's always better to be safer, than cooler. But I felt as if the luminics put out enough light for me to be able to see, and many people mistaked them as HID's so I was more than happy with them.

yea man i liked the way my luminics looked but for me i guess it wasn't for the best. like i said if i lived closer into the city i would defiantly kept my luminics.

as far as pics i don't have a digital camera so i will have to post cell phone pictures. maybe tomorrow night i can get them up

 

yellow is best in crappy weather there is no doubt.

1) I am wondering why in the hell my stock bulbs, with over 140,000 miles on them (and I turn them on for the morning commute and evening commute even if the sun is still up) have not burned out, and I yanked them out last night and they look brand new, no buildup or burn look ?

OEM lasts longer than any bulb ??? why dat ?

I know halogen vaporises the filament and the metal vapor redeposits back on the wire, but over time atoms of it should be getting stuck to the glass (this is why if you touch them they burn out...the atoms pile onto the hot spot on the glass and eventually the filament burns out 'cuz it doesn't get repacked with atoms)

2) all this noize about silverstars, well I just got a set and slapped them in. yes they have a blue filter, but they do not look blue at all when on. the do provide more light at night in dry.

3) It is gonna be torrential rain and freezing rain tonight, and I happen to be driving 600 miles in it tonight. I will report the real deal with these silverstar ultras and if my rain vision has been compromised from the blue filter (which my eye cannot detect) I will post up. I use rain-x and drive a lot in crud conditions and I will know right away if these silverstars are 'just good for dry and junk in wet' or 'ok to use full time'

I will also be working the instrument panel intensity from full to off, and experimenting with my night vision. I also will go dark, and use a red filter inside the 4runner so my pupils will open, and see if the silverstars make my pupil contract from washout more then OEM bulbs do. 'cuz I am crazy like that

4) I do not mind chucking them and putting my stock bulbs back in. 50 bucks for a silverstar test is worth it to me. because the silverstars DO light up awesome in dry conditions, and they have zero blue tinge when you look at them. I parked the 4runner, rode my bike 1 mile down the road then turned around and rode back to evaluate the silverstar and how it looks for real. it looks like a white/white/barely yellow beam to me. no blue detected.

I am wondering if the loss of the extra yellow is a compromise. will report my results.

 

It seems some people want a bulb more to impress people than provide performance for themselves.

 

my ultra has no blue in it what so ever, it has a golden filter on the top?

 

Very true. Like I said earlier in the thread, I have tried almost all of these white/blue halogens. Not the smartestt thing I have done and definitely expensive. After all of that, I went with Osram 80/85 regular halogen H4 bulb with an upgraded wire harness and it works wonders. I will choose function/performance over looks from now on when it comes to automobile lighting.

 

test complete. silverstar ultra not so great in rain.

will keep them though until they blow, the difference in rain is about 5%

gonna go to dealer and get new oem bulbs they last 8 years and
keep them in the vehicle until the silverstars blow

now I know....no hard feelings, but any blue tint is crap

 

I had similar problems with the Ultras, got about 4 months on two different sets.

 

I had some on a Previa. I could not tell a difference between the "bright" and "dim" settings. Do you guys fond this to be true on 4runners as well?

 

I've had the Silverstar Ultra's for 6 mos and am very pleased with the improvement. Installed one side first and took a picture of the beams shiniing up against a wall. You'd be surprised how much whiter/stronger the beam is. Still have the pic if anyone wants to compare.

So based on many threads and this thread, the conclusion is Silverstar or Silverstar Ultra is crap in rain or fog, but ok in dry night.
