driving without the front differential

so late yesterday i started swapping out the front diff with 4.10s for my other diff with 4.88s. i got the old one out and it got dark so i called it a day. today i had to go to work and i figured that i would be fine to drive since i have manual hubs (free position obviously) and i won't be using 4wd. well this morning, i got about 30ft from my house before i heard that something wasn't co-operating. either the CVs or the front driveshaft is moving and clunking around. which one and why? i got underneath and they are not locked.

If you take the center section out, and want to drive. You have to also take out the cv shafts and the front drive shaft. Even though nothing is locked in, your cv shafts and driveshaft will still move because of the fluid connection caused by the grease. They just wont move with alot of force.
