Drive without front diff?

Hey everyone,

I recently picked up my first 2000 4Runner. It has a pretty bad oil leak from what appear to be oil pan leak. I’m planning on doing the fix soon.

From my search I need to remove the front diff. But I found that the front main seal or oil pump mounted to the block may also cause a leak like my(pretty bad leak). Which is a bit troublesome.

My question is, if I remove the front diff, both cv axles and front driveshaft. Then install old cv axle stubs(broken old cv axles) to hold the wheel bearing. Could I still drive it in 2WD? This way I could still drive the car while ordering parts.

I mainly work on Honda’s so transfer case and 4x4 is still new to me.

Thanks for reading!

Yes, if you install old stub axles to keep the wheel bearings clamped, you should be fine.
