If I don't have the HDs, I am going to be pissed.
I got mine from Central 4WD back then, and they ordered them in.

Oh well, they have been on here since the spring of '99, and have not sagged at all.

My HD's (supposed, I guess) are also silver.

Keep us all posted, I was just a about 12 hrs away from ordering the HD's. I might wait until a final verdict!!

 

Mike from Xtreme called Downey today and they said that silver is in fact HD. They told him I had already called them but I informed him that I was waiting for his response before calling them. He is going to double check my order in the morning and call me. Now that is customer service!

Visual differences between coils are slim...HD coil has a tad thicker coil and could possibly be slightly taller.

Hey Guys,

I called Downey yesterday (2/25/03), talked to salesrep named Louis and verified the difference between the standard (regular) and HD coils. He said that the Part Number for standard is 48290 and the Heavy Duty one is 48290-HD. Both coils come in silver color and the difference is the wire diameter .630 for non-HD and .660 for HD. He also mentioned that the non-HD is a little taller about 1/16 of an inch.

I called them again today to make sure they are not just BSing me. This time I talked to a guy named Scott, he told me the same thing Louis told me yesterday. He also added that when those coils arrive at their warehouse, they separate the non-HD from the Heavy duty. And those non-HD were boxed and labeled with a felt tip marker as 48290 and of course the HD one will be labeled as 48920-HD with whatever marker they can grab.

With that said, if you ordered the heavy duty ones and your part number does not have a suffix - HD after that part number then you received the non-HD coils. All along we think that we received the heavy duty coils but noooooooo. Time to make some phone calls. And for those with -HD on their boxes how do you know if those were really HD? There is alway that what if they send you the non-HD and marked the box with -HD. Hmmmm something to think about.

Now my question is: Why do they paint non-HD and HD with same color? Why not paint the HD different color to make it easy for the consumer to tell the difference? We are not in their sorting department. How can we tell the difference between .630 and .660 when you open that box that was just drop by UPS/Fedex on your doorsteps? It may not be a big deal for some but it is a big deal to me. $170+ is a lot of beanies.

Hopefully I did not stir you guys up and helped clear things up. Please don't shoot the messenger as I'm just trying to help others on this issue.

Noel, if you talk with them again, suggest the paint job.
One can stay silver, and the other other a funky red or yellow would make me happy.

 

Well mine are on their way back to Downey for replacement. Thankyou Mike! I'm a little worried that those of you who reported a firm ride with the HD actually got the normal springs - I'd hate to have an overly stiff ride.

 

I will have to dig up my original box and look at it.
I'm sure I have the HD's though, as you have seen some of my cargo box pics, and with over 200 lb of cargo back there, I don't sag.

I already suggested that to them to paint the HD different colors so us consumers can easily identify which is which. I don't know if they are going to heed or not but I gave them my customer feedback. It is up to them.

I know they will make you happy if they paint the HD with funky red to match your Edelbrock shocks right?

Funky? I bought a can of red spray paint to do mine. Glad I straigtened out this mess before painting them.

I got the regular Downey Coils and they're silver. I wanted a softer ride and the back of my 4Runner is usually empty. I haven't seen any comparison between the HD and the regular coils.

I would recommend the HD if you tow a lot, but then again with the 3.0L, there's not much power to tow anyhow.

 

I wanted HD because I want to avoid having to replace sagging springs again. I've loaded my 4Runner up a few times where the back dropped at least an inch so I want to avoid that in the future. The tradeoff will be a firmer ride but I'm hoping it won't be a jarring ride.

 

I've loaded my back 4Runner up with 4 people and 400lb + gear and the thing didn't sag an inch.

The downeys, whether they be the HD or Regular are designed to correct the problem with the stock springs. I haven't heard of any one experiencing sagging troubles after installing the regular downey's.

A guy is selling his HDs if anyone wants to check the price with him.

 

Went to a 4X4 shop in my area today after work and asked about Downeys and the install. The guy recommends TRW HD's stock replacement coils. They cost $97. Anyone ever heard of these? They also qouted me about $100 for install. What worried me was when I told him mine was a 4X4, he said he knows and that you can't get 2wd 4Runners in the states. I just shook my head and said Ok.

PS I had decided to go with Downey HD but after reading the last couple of posts, I'm think that I will go with either the downey regular or OME regular. Still can't decide.
