Doesn't recognize being in Park
Basically when I try to turn off my 4runner, the key stops at the 'ACC' position in the ignition. I use to spend about ten minutes in every parking lot turning the key back and forth until it turned all the way to 'lock.'
Now I figured out if I put the car in park on a hill, give it a chance to roll slightly forward or backward, then a clicking sound will happen in the gearbox, It then allows me to turn the key to lock. Sometimes I get out and pull the car back and forth while turning the key. This is usually successful 50% of the time.
What is going on? If you know, how can I fix it?

Seems like there's a problem with the linkage, but I have never had to work on Toyota linkage. When you put it in park, but the key wont turn off, will the truck still roll as if it's not in park?
What about that bypass switch if it has one? Have you tried fiddling with it?
And last, Im wondering if there is some type of selenoid activates when it goes in Park.
Maybe someone else with this topic will chime in.

Once you put it in park try pushing it farther forward and then turn the key. It's probably your interlock switch. I think there was a write up recently on here about fixing it. Search for it.
