diffs on the cheap?

i was looking through car-part.com the other day when something occurred to me. instead of paying several hundred dollars to have each of my diffs regeared, couldn't i just buy 2 g144 code (8" V6, 4.88 ratio) diffs and put them in, since i have a solid front axle? i believe this is the diff that you cannot change the gear ratio, but that doesn't bother me since i just want 4.88s, and if i went bigger i probably wouldn't be using toy running gear

my question is, can you put an ordinary V6 locker in? a few of these particular differentials were going on car-part.com for only around $250, so if i bought 2 and put aussie lockers in them both, i'd only be down $900!

Yes, you can use any available V6 lockers, LSD's, etc. You are also right about not being able to change ratios later, the housing is unique, it has a greater pinion offset than others. If you can find them, go for it. Problem is they are quite rare compared to other ratios.
