Diff. Breather Question

Do you need to use Teflon tape or thread compound or anything like that for the piece that goes into the differential?

I don't think so as I haven't seen it listed on any of the write-ups I've read, plus some of it might get off into the diff by accident while screwing it in with teflon tape on it.

My pennies!

Thanks waskillywabbit, I haven't seen it in any write-ups either so I am not going to use anything.

GRN,

I believe most people do use teflon tape. At least that's what I researched before I did mine. http://www.4runners.org/articles/typerdiff

Bob and I like to respectfully disagree on lots of things these days it seems...

http://www.wattora.com/mods/diffbreather/

But this is the site I used to install my rear diff and I don't recall any tape, but I don't think it makes a big difference since the fitting screws in there pretty far and doesn't have tape on it when it comes out.

I don't use tape. It's air tight without it. Have you ever seen the mess that teflon tape leaves in the threads when you take something apart? If you ever have to remove the breather, all those fragments are going to be in the diff

I used teflon tape also. Think it is in my write up as well.

Teflon tape = plumbers gimmick

The inventor has probably long since retired (with much money)...but did he ever prove his case? Probably not.

I wonder if a few little bits of teflon tape in the diff will cause any problems....

Heavy duty gears verses tape bits..........

No contest really

Teflon tape can cause leaks in some threads you lock down. Toyota didn't use any and it really isn't necessary for that location.

I don't think it matters if teflon tape got into the diff since teflon is itself a lubricant.

I didn't use it. Doesn't seem to me that it is needed. The plug locks down pretty tight without it.

Used teflon tape on mine, just enough to cover the last couple threads towards the barbed ends. Sometimes people go a little overboard w/ using the stuff.

Well it's unanimous but there was some good points. I am not going to use anything on the threads.

Thanks for all the input

Now I'm wondering what is the temp rating on Teflon tape. I have put a IR gun on my diff. to see how hot it gets and after driving 40 mile it was 150*F.

If it worries you that much, put it in without tape, then put a bead of silicone around the base where it goes into the threaded hole. That would keep anything out that the threads might allow to pass.

just my $0.02

Don't worry about that, I've used teflon coated wires in very high temperature ovens. Plus...they use teflon on frying pans!

I have always wondered how they get the Teflon to stick to the pan, since it is so slippery and all....
