Deckplate mod on ebay. Who's the wise guy?
#22
And I got all excited when I saw that deckplate listing on Ebay last week. I was already working out my bid strategy when I read the fine print. So should we flame his @$$ for calling it a "cold air intake"?

$25?! I paid $8 for mine, plus a couple cents worth of the sensor-safe silicone I already had a tube of... ISR mod? $3 for the caps. Tuneup? $10 for a set of Toyota plugs.
So I'm up to $21.02 for a full tuneup and much improved intake with increased power, response, and fuel efficiency... Oh wait add $1.99 for the pot and switch I got for the ECT mod I haven't installed yet. $23.01. Yeah I'm a big spender...

Its buyer beware on ebay as anywhere in life. For someone who does not have the time to spend on here every single day, multiple times per day
, they are actually getting a good deal cost benefit wise, as he is only really paying 100-200% markup.
That said, the seller better not have included a detailed write-up from a YotaTech members personal website.

If I he would call it what it actually is (not cold-air) and had some silicone in the package, this wouldn't bug me as much. Maybe he was going to try it then decided against it and has gotten so addicted to selling on Ebay that his house is nigh on empty. I dunno..
It REALLY wouldn't bother me if he was selling an actual modified box.....(rebuilt pouts, still hurt from the tease).

Well...until someone gets a patent for the deck plate mod...more power to him I say. He's just capitalizing on others ideas but if someone can make some money and it's not illegal or treading on others rights....

Ok, let 'im capitalize.
Let's take it a step further and get together on some stock airboxes. A few people can mod 'em and we can sell 'em. At least people will actually be getting something more than they would if they just buy deckplates from this guy for 350% markup.

this is what he says
I kind of wanted to see where this guy might be coming from, so I sent him a message reagarding the mod. Here's the the message and response. Judge for yourself:
Me -
> You know, this isn't really a cold air intake. The mod allows for free
>flowing air intake, but the air is the same temp as what you would be
>getting before the mod. IT might end up even a little warmer since you're
>drawing air from a point that's closer to the engine.
> Do you have any air boxes to sell that are already modified?
Him -
"put a temp gauge in the inlet tube drive your truck around. you will see a
20-25 degree defferns in the temp when going in to the inlet with the plate
on an the plate off... do your homework ............................"
anybody temp gauged their box mod? BTW, I admit my statement about the air possibly being warmer was conjecture.....

ebay mod
I actually bid and won this auction (before I visited with the wise folks here...), but I was refunded my money. So he's probably not a cheat, just an entrepreneur. I had emailed several times before I bidded explaining I had the 2.7L and would this work, yada yada yada. The response (when I got one) was usually "cold air = hp, more air = hp...." No comment on it being the V6 airbox. So when I won I gave him one more email saying I HAVE A LITTLE 4 BANGER, WILL THIS MOD WORK? The response I got was "your money has been refunded."
So I'm still brainstorming on the 2.7 mod, I've got the plan I just want a used airbox to hack up first. Anyone have a used air box? I can use any air box from '96 to current ('03) 2.7 liters, right? I thought I read somewhere that the 2.4 liter air box will work, too? Anyone know? Thanks

If someone can put together some stock intake elbows (junkyard specials from tacomas and 4Runners) with a section of 3" stainless or aluminum tubing for the straight section then braze on some vacum fittings you would have a killer competitor to the $250 POS K&N FIPK......best part is yours would be a true bolt on and wouldn't break cause of the flex elbows. These mods are so easy to manufacture as a home job for us cheapa$$es, but for the people who don't have the time, know how, or want it to look good....there is a market out there. Don't bother with the copyright stuff, you know the first to market makes the killing....all the rest become a commodity. Set the price at $150 to $200 and I bet you would get alot of takers. Maybe I am .......
