My NY to CA trip is done and i will post specifics about gas mileage later. I do have a problem though. Now that I am doing city driving I have noticed that when I release the brake pedal there is sometimes a thump from the tranyy. Doesnt always happen and it shifts great. Could this be a fluid problem?

Could be, could also be something to do with the mounts. check all your you rmounts and bolts and what not to make sure everything is tight.
