Murphy's Law - I was changing the oil tonight before hitting the road tomorrow AM for Thanksgiving. As soon as I took off the skid plate I noticed some dried pink residue. I followed it up to where I believe it was leaking. Could someone tell me what part appears to be leaking? The photo is looking down by the oil dip stick.


It gets even better; I have 35,723 miles on odometer. That gives me 277 miles of warranty. Now I can't take the truck tomorrow and have to cram our stuff into the accord for 2-3 hour trip. Yeah!

At least it should be covered by warranty.

looks like it may be the gasket around the thermostat or possibly from the water pump itself..............have you noticed a significant loss in coolant at all??

 

No - there is still plenty in the overflow container. Hopefully, I caught it early enough.

 

Most likely the water pump. I work at a toyota dealer and we replace lots of them under warranty, even with low mileage. Toyota water pumps are really no better than other water pumps from "other" manufacturers. 1998-2002 Corolla pumps are bad for leaks too.

That is definitely the water pump. I had mine changeout by the dealer under warranty. The pump only lasted about 31k miles before it started leaking. Might as well have them change the timing belt for cheap since they will be opening it up anyway. That's the beauty of the Toyota red coolant. You can tell right away if something is wrong with your cooling system. Good luck and be safe driving.

in which case you should have a lot more than 270 miles left.

 

I concur about the water pump. My 98 Taco with 29K miles had a leaky water pump. Yes, that is covered under the power train warranty also. Take it on in, you should have no problems.

 

Had mine done at 59K and the replaced the timing belt as well under the warranty. Make sure that the belt is free too if the do it.

I have an appointment to get it repaired on Monday. I will post the diagnosis for those interested. The dealer confirmed that it would be covered under the powertrain warranty so I could only travel 24,277 miles before Monday

 

Powertrain warranty is 5years/60000 miles whichever comes first.

Thought I would followup for those you were kind enough to respond - it was the waterpump.

Scott - how did you manage to swing a timing belt under warranty? I thought all belts were 'wear and tear' items?

I asked the Stealer why they replaced it under warrranty and they said because the antifreeze was all over the belt and it will degrade the belt. i can't say I know it is true but that is good enough for me!
