My girlfriend and I are debating towing a light trailer (2500lbs dry) to AK from California. I got a lot of good advice on here from many replies. Thanks!

One of the things I would definitely do would be to get EBC. I know nothing about it, but I noticed on a "how to install EBC system" thread that you need a 7-pin connection. My 4runner has a connection on the back for 6 pin? that I use for towing a small boat trailer.. so my question is does that mean it would be cheaper to do the install than without it? Is the wiring already there?


About how much should I expect someone to charge me for the EBC installation? It isn't the type of work I can do on my own...at least I think.

The type of connector plug that you have should be suitable for electric brake use.

I cannot speak to the expense or difficulty of brake controller installation.

It is a common installation, so it should'nt be too expensive.

The U-Haul shops likely do these installs, but I'd shop around for pricing, for sure.

I do know that most of the newer controllers are all electronic, and they rely on inertial input in order to function.

All my trailer brake controller experience is with the old controllers that tapped into the vehicle brake hydraulics to get their signal. I have plenty experience with those.

Since the inception of ABS, I don't think they use the hydraulic type controller anymore.

 

WHERE IS THIS DARNED Green wire w/ White Runner? Where the heck do I find it? there's 20 green wires w/ white stripes under my dash. Is that the only wire I have to tap into? I know about wiring the positive and ground and trailer brake power wire, but the rest of it I forget. I did this a long time ago and remember having a hard time finding concrete info.

 

I agree with millball. Looks to me like you have a 7-pin connector. 6 around the circle and one in the middle, just like my 7-pin connection.

Seems like the wiring should all be there, you just need to find the other end of it to plug into the brake controller.

I installed all of it an my Tacoma, and it wasn't really a big deal. I just bought the controller and a kit that came with the wiring harness, connectors and the 7-pin plug.

Rather than tying into the brake hydraulics, it ties into the wire connected to your brake lights, if I remember right. The one that's right up against the actual brake pedal, which gets activated when you step on the brake, sending a signal to the brake lights.

 

The good old days when you installed the Tee at the Master cylinder does indeed bring back memories.

I use 7 pin plugs for everything most without brake controllers .

So unless the brake control unit was removed good chance the wiring might not be there.

It is just a good splice into the brake switch wire a wire from the control to your center pin on the 7 pin plug
