Code P0505

Well guys, I just came back from AutoZone and found an error code of P0505: Idle Air Control Valve Control Circuit. Probable Causes - 1.) Open or short circuit condition 2.) Poor electrical connection 3.) Failed IAC Motor. This is what was stated on the printout.

I thought for sure I was going to have to replace my front O2 sensor based on my Check Engine, VSC, TRAC OFF lights coming on once in a while. But the diagnostic tells me otherwise. Do I have to go back to AutoZone when the these lights come back on to find out if my O2 sensor is bad? Now what do I have to do with the error code of P0505? Would this cause the same lights to display as well? I have 2001 V6. Oh yeah, my 4Runner idles at 500rpm, is that too low?

Ok, so I went to PepBoys and picked up some SeaFoam Deep Creep. I sprayed the throttle body and cleaned it out without removing it from the engine. After putting everything back together I noticed that my rpm now idles at 650 while in gear and 800 while in park. I guess I fixed the problem because it used to idle at 500 while in gear. My questions is, what is the normal operating RPM while in gear and while in park for a 2001 V6 4Runner? I swear I searched but did not find anything. Oh by the way, the IAC on my rig is located on the side of the throttle body not on the bottom.

Sounds about right now. I think it's usually about 700rpm but that should be fine.

I've been struggling with a low idle for a while too. I took off the IAC unit and cleaned it last weekend. It was REALLY dirty and gummed up. I used to idle ~500 to 600 rpm in gear before the clean, and now I idle ~650 in gear.

Do you notice your idle fluctuating while stopped and in gear? I sometimes catch mine dropping to 300 and them jumping back up to 650 again. Also when I am parking and I need to reverse and go forwards several times, I notice that my idle starts to fall. It sometimes reaches 500 and my 4Runner starts to shake a bit.

My idle fluctuates on several occasions. When I turn on my headlights, the RPMs drop a tad. When I turn on my A/C the RPMs raise. You should take your rig to an Autozone and run a diagnostic to see if you pull any error codes.

650 RPM while in gear would be just perfect. Mine is very smooth at that engine speed although in winter it may vibrate a little in gear at a stoplight. Out of gear and idling you should see about 700-750 RPM (800 would be a tad high but nothing to get concerned about).
