I have a 99' toyota tacoma. Resently my clutch stated slipping and I need to replace it. I was thinking about getting a centerforce I, but I noticed that there is a 9 1/4" and a 10". How do I know which one I need. Do I even need to get a stronger clutch or would I be better off getting a stock clutch. Also Im not the best mechanice so will I be able to do it myself? I would appreciate any help and advice. Thank you.

 

The OEM clutch is always a safe bet unless you are pushing a lot more power or need more clamping force for some reason (like heavy towing, etc). Also, we are going to need a bit more information than "I am not the best mechanic" to determine if you can handle a clutch R&R or not.

Your best bet is to have an experienced wrencher there with you to supervise/help with the R&R. I can tell you right now that the dealer is going to want about $750 or so to do it, so you need to decide if it's worth it to you.

For $750 you could have the following:

1. OEM clutch kit
2. Tools
3. Jacks and stands
4. 2-day pass to the TIS FSM online (Factory Service Manual)
5. Trans fluid change
6. Misc stuff

In my eyes, you will be coming out way ahead if you can safely do this yourself. Your call though.

 

Well I replaced my cv axles and my power steering pump and fixed brakes. So replacing a clutch will be my biggest challenge so far. So you are saying that i should get an OEM? Will I be ok for mild off-roading a 4-wheeling? Does having a lift and bigger tires make a difference? I have a 3" suspension and 32 11.50's. Will I need to get my fly wheel turned.

 

yes is you replace your clutch your fly has to be resurfaced. while your in there if you have the money, replace it with an aftermarket one. not sure if they make one for that vehicle, but fidanza makes some very nice flys, both steel and aluminum, go with steel
