Clicking/ticking When wheel is cut all the way

I'm having a problem when I turn the wheel all the way to one side or the other, I get this abnormal ticking/clicking sound. Its not real loud, but it is something I've noticed. I got under there and checked the CV boots and I couldn't find anything leaking grease or oil. So I'm not sure what to check or do about this, any ideas?

The truck is a 97 4runner 4x4 with 135k miles.

Thanks guys.

Nah, its not any worse in any drive. Wouldn't the boots be torn or leaking?

Nah, this is the only thread I've posted about this issue.

It is only when I'm moving, it almost sounds like there is a wheel well plastic piece hitting the tread of the tires. However, I've checked the tire clearance and that doesn't seem to be the source. It sounds like a plastic clicking noise as opposed to a metal on metal noise, if that makes sense. So thats why I'm not sure if its CV joint related but I'm not for sure...

it sounds like the cv joint. it will not sound like metal scraping. it sounds just like what you are experiencing.

most likely you have either worn out cv joints or a cv boot busted, dried out, or got some dirt/stones into the torn boot and slowly damaged the joint.

sounds like new front axles for you

If it were the axles, wouldn't it be worse in 4x4?

sorry for digging up an old thread, my truck;s CV has been going for a while (noticed a click while 4x4 in at 1st) im sure its the drivers side CV. Went and checked it, and the boot isnt torn and there seems to be grease in it still.. it will sometimes click while driving.

my question is are there any problems with an OEM part or is there something aftermarket i should look at?

also, uh, what does cv stand for anyways? lol

Not sure what CV means...don't really care to know other than it is the front drive axles.

I did end up replacing both of mine. I discovered the noise to be from my boots rubbing against itself, creating the noise. My truck had 137k miles and the original CV's so it was time to get replaced anyway.

I got my replacement part from Autozone for $80 bucks per side with a lifetime warranty on them (and no core charge). The design of the boot is much different so I shouldn't have this problem again.

It stands for - 'Constant Velocity'.

oem aint bad, but you can find cheaper going aftermarket. Lifetime warranties are good too...as long as you are not replacing them every year. (That just gets old.)

Glad to hear you solved your problem.
