i think the stability comes from the track width, not as important with the tire width

Great photos! I noticed your custom build safari roof rack. It's a beauty. I'm looking for a similar rack for my wife's 99 RAV4 4X4. Can you tell me where you got this, and how much it cost?
Thanks.

Sorry, but the rack was a one-off design built by myself and my brother-in-law. It cost about $60 dollars Canadian to build and about 8 hours of labour, or 3 nights after work. Well worth it though. I can't wait to use it in the summer for camping etc.

Nice rig man. No lift kit and that thing has the same ground clearence as a jeep with a 6 inch lift. What am I doing wrong here? I have the rear coils and 32x11.50 m/t's, no torsion bar crankage or extended shocks. Do the extended shocks give you more clearnce more travel or both? Man that 2nd gen is sick, i want 33x10.50's now.
Few pictures

If you wanted more width, just get the 33/10.5's and then some 8" wheels with lower offset. That's what I'll probably do.

Well, with the suspension and tires the overall height of the truck increased by about 6 inchs. The rear shocks give it amazing flex with the sway bar off.

But I sold it a couple of weeks ago and bought a 1982 Landcruiser BJ60 with a 4 cylinder diesel. I still miss my Runner though.

Mike.

Sweet man, thanks for replying. I'm kinda noob at this but if i were to install extended shocks I wouldnt need any other modifications to complement them? This would also give me more travel and clearence correct? Thanks.

I'm really likin the runner.....it was clean. Let me in on how you mounted that roof rack. Did you mount it on the existing factory rack or did you mount it in the seal of the rear windows?

My first idea was to get a Surco rack and put that on but the price blew me away. Instead I bought the brackets for the Surco rack seperatly which are specifically made for the stock 4runner roof rack rails. Then I built the rack accordingly. Pretty simple and saved me the hassle of trying to fabricate brackets to fit in the stock roof rack rails.

As for the suspension, if I can recall the shocks are 26 inch long fully extended. I had the 2.5inch Old man emu coils and 2 inch spacer. When I had the lift installed I drove over to a local 4x4 shop with the stock shocks still on. I had them measure how long of a shock I could put on the truck. Worked out perfectly.
