changing cabin air filter

changing cabin air filter
well ive owned my 4runner for about 5 years and put about 60,000 miles on it and have never changed the cabin air filter, so im way overdue. and now that the heater is on daily the smell isnt exactly the freshest coming out of the vents. according to toyotaDIY the glove box needs to be removed to access the filter, but to do this you need to push in the sides of the glove box so it detaches. when i do this it feels like it is about one millimeter from the whole thing snapping
. is there an easier way?? by the way i own a 97 4runner sr5

no cabin air filter. not in the 3rd gen (i believe they started with the 4th gen 2003)...
however, we do have a fan that is located under the glovebox, held in by three screws that is usually pretty dirty if it hasn't been cleaned in awhile. (i didn't remove the glovebox)
here's the writeup:

plenty of other good writeups on that site, as well. good luck!

There is none, sadly, I have been thinking of ways to try and retrofito ne in, because everytime I wheel in sand, the next day when I turn on the air, the stupid thing sprays sand all over.
And there is the fine dust that makes it look like i wheeled with my windows down.

You can access the air intake by removing the shroud at the base of the windshield. Remove wipers, remove screws, and it pops right out. Then you can see the intake snorkel and with a flashlight, you can see the fan itself (through the snorkel). I'd imagine you could fab something up to cover the snorkel (like a piece of fiberglass or something). Not the easiest thing to change, but it only takes a minute or two to get the wipers and shroud off.

There you go, read through the whole thread, the solution is on page 3ish.

I was wrong, you can't easily access the snorkel from the top. I was thinking of the intake on my Passat.

thanks everyone. its pretty dumb they never made an air filter for these. ive never got sand sprayed on me but there has been times when quite a bit of dust blows out. it would be nice to fab some kind of filter.

I always have snow coming out of my vents in the morning, I don't know if a cabin filter would help, I just have to laugh when I turn on the heat in the morning and snow comes flying out at my face.
