VSV = Vacuum Switching Valve. I had to look it up in the FSM myself.

I think one of two things are going on with this code.Either pieces of charcoal break free from canister and float in system causing a blockage in the VSV,or the VSV goes electrically open,or the VSV works but cannot seal properly internally...Most of the time the VSV sticks,But before you replace the VSV inspect the hoese very carefully for floating pieces of charcoal..If there are any small pieces, you will need to replace the charcoal assy.

its a major bummer that none of these links and pics work any more. just got a quote from the stealer. the VSV is $60 and the canister is $400! i guess i will try replacing just the valve and hope that works. any write ups with working pix would be appreciated. thanks.

You are going to need to remove the canister and replace the VSV with the canister on the bench, should be held onto the canister with either a 10mm or phillips screw(gonna be tight, use good screwdriver and body weigh to limit cam-out)..Just mark where all the hoses go and it should go smoothly...

BTW.. can you post the VSV part# for the canister(2001-2002)?

I agree, it would sure be nice to get a write up of the charcoal canister, possible clean out, and VSV replacement for the 01-02 by the gas tank. So many hoses!

Does the 5VZ-FE have an EGR or did you just not put one in?

goat, that diagram will help a lot. ive read a few post about the canister being located somewhere under the truck on some model years. can you point me to the general area where your canister is? is your VSV below the canister as documented by others? thanks for the help!

Here's my 93 truck, the canister (can) is still in the factory location. The 2001 5VZ VSVs are installed on the firewall:

Onroadrunner, I just talked to the dealer, as far as our years (01, 02) they said that the VSV they usually replace is in the rear just in front of the spare tire. Those under the hood they don't stock. They told me that they usually are not the problem as far as VSVs are concerned. The ones in the engine bay were about $20 more each than the one in the rear. The canister is also under the vehicle, in the rear in front of the spare tire. Just FYI

X2 on PITA to get out! It took me about 1 hour to untangle the wire to the VSV for VPS and to find the clip holding 4 hoses up between the crossmember on the frame and the rear diff (only higher than the diff). But after I figured out how to do it, I replaced the canister in under 1 hour.
Good as new!
