Man, that is like asking someone to discribe the difference between HP and torque. Most know what it is, but kind of hard to explain.

For your purposes, it is an adjustment for reception sensitivity. Normally you will turn the squelch up until it breaks and you hear static all the time. Then back it down a tad until it goes away. Now you have the maximum reception sensitivity without hearing a bunch of static all the time.

You can also turn it down so you only hear those that are close to you and it weeds out those that are far away that you may not want to listen to.

I hope that helps.

Gadget is correct.

The squelch quiets the background radio noise when there is no signal present. Simply turn the squelch until the noise goes away. The background noise can get pretty annoying after awhile and the squelch will keep the receiver quiet unless there is a signal present.

Depending upon who you ask, "Squelch" is either a Norwegian pop band (http://www.ifi.uib.no/staff/stein/sq_innhold.html) or a way to attenuate background noise.

Squelch - This is an adjustable control that keeps the speaker muted (quiet and free from static) when a station is not transmitting. It works whether the radio is scanning, searching or manually stepping through stored frequencies. CB radios also have this control.
