Can I get rid of this thing on my vacuum line?

Whily topping off my A/C system today I noticed a sucking sound. I looked at the vacuum lines coming from the intake manifold of my 3.0. One of them has a little device in the middle of it - orange plastic thing with the vacuum line hooking up at each end. I found a small piece of missing plastic from one edge of it and that is where the vacuum leak is. I looked inside and there is a spring so I'm assuming there is a diaphragm. Where would I get one of these? Is it a valve of some sort? Can I just connect the two ends of that vacuum line together?

Anyone? I've looked in my manuals and can't find any reference to these things on the vacuum lines but have found a couple of other ones.

thats a check valve--right? ( does it look like one? ), it should only have one in and one out, orange on one side. you need that piece by the way, i would just replace it with another one.

If it's a check valve, by definition, it allows flow in one direction only - be it air or liquid...
