A/c Squealing

A/c Squealing
hey all!
i was reading in the for sale section, the A/C compressor...
my a/c makes a horrific squealing more often than not. sometimes, its ok... but other times... it just kicks in while the a/c is on... .. "SQUEAAAKKKKKKKLDKFJ:LSfj;skfaj;sdfjsa;kfd;jD"
so i shut the a/c off. its hot in cali these days but im used to driving with the windows down. i actually like it
but my gf doesnt like the heat when im driving her around. lOL 
on the for sale posts, they were talkin about the belt being worn/torn or what nots. i havent checked it yet. just wanted to get your guys' imput as well.
the a/c still gets ice cold though
