A/C compressor help

I have a 88' 4runner with the 3.0.
The A/C compressor was working fine, then the clutch bearings went out. so I disconnected the belt. now it is getting hot here in oklahoma, and I am wanting to gwet it working again.
I am wanting to just replace the clutch, because the system was just charged and was blowing very cold air. It is pretty expensive to re-charge also.
Has anyone done this? and how hard is it to do?
I have found a perfectly working compressor at t a salvage yard, but it is on a 5-mge (?) engine, will this one work on mine? and can I just get the clutch off of this on and put on mine.
What engines used the same ac compressor as mine?
Lots of question, I know, but I reaaaaally nedd it fixed before it gets hotter.

Thanks
Kent

Ok, here we go. First off on the clutch, if you haven't done this before i would have a tech do it for you. Here is why, the clutch itself is easy to install but IT HAS TO BE SHIMMED RIGHT! I have shops come in all the time with brand new clutchs burnt up wanting a refund becuase they installed and didn't shim it right. That is the main thing is to have it shimmed right and knowing how to do it takes some experience.
The 5mge will not work on yours at all, completely different parts. I don't know if they even make and aftermarket one or not but here is how much it (brand new OEM) would cost through me. Drop me a line if you want to get one or have further questions.

88410-14150 A/C clutch $119.66
88335-12050 shims $.44

Total w/ shipping: $126.10

Hi TOR, you might go down the list and check the other a/c question thread, see if I'm on right track there... I'm a bit rusty, I haven't turned wrenches in 10 years, but theory is theory... <grin>

Everthing you said in the other AC posts I saw is right. I digress from my first statement, with a little southern engineering anything can work. For how long is anybody's guess. Just make sure you have enough oil in the compressor and that it is the right type before doing the swap. The manifolds might have to be changed as well, not sure on that one since I can't see it.

If I wre to buy a new compressor, would it be set up correctly? if so, it would be cheaper to get a brand new one, and fix the old one. I assume the compressor would have to be off for them to put on the new clutch anyway.
Thanks for the info. I will prolly order one from you next week after I get paid again.

Thanks
Kent
