Buyback Program?

Got a letter from my dealer today:

"Finding pre-owned vehicles in good condition locally and nationally is becoming nearly impossible and very expensive. As a result, if you own a 1999 through 2003 Toyota 4Runner with automatic and air (in good condition) Right Toyota would like the opportunity to buy it from you."

Anyone else getting this? Says they will pay $2k over NADA.

Do you think it's just 4Runners they want or do they send these to anybody just to get them in the door? I laughed when I read it. They won't take mine from me!

I think a lot of people got this letter. I even got a letter like this for my old 87 Maxima. They just want you to buy a new car from them.

I got the same letter for my '03 Subaru Forester. A new scam being used by the dealers(all manufacturers).

They will pay you $2K over the NADA, but then tack on $2500 to the new Runner purchase. Or if they are lucky, you will want to finance through them at prime +1%.

My GF got a similar thing on her SVT, said she could get a new one (2 years newer) and keep the same payments due to better financing available. She actually went down there - they couldn't even get close... Pissed her off. I kept silent...

They're still trying to buy my Ford Expedition which I don't have. Maybe I should go in, and get a new car

buyback programs are exactly what people say they are: to get you into the dealership for the sole purpose of making a ton of money off of you:

- typically they only want < 4 year old vehicles that they know are in high demand as used vehicles. they will promise you that you'll get a new car w/ the same payment as your current vehicle, but they'll ream you on the other "3 squares". if you dont know what "squares" are, do a google search for "4 square and auto salesmen (or auto sales)".

- they will recondition your used vehicle and most likely sell it in their "certified" program. more money for the dealership

- they will get a new car sales and dealerships who sell more new cars typically get their pick of the litter, when the new model year comes out

thats the basic idea behind these programs.
