Brakes: Need Advice

I have never experienced the brakes operating properly since I purchased the vehicle because of the axle seal problem, which soaked the back shoes with the oil. I fixed the seals, cleaned the drums and installed new shoes. Then I ran the master cylinder dry when I was bleeding the back brakes after replacing my axle seals. I bled it again and ran lot of fluid through it. I am not too impressed with the brake performance. The pedal has some travel but seems relatively firm. I have never looked at the front brakes other than to confirm that there is enough pad material. The brake fluid looked pretty old. The vehicle has 284k miles on the odo. Thoughts?

Never mind. I drove her hard today and the brakes got much better. It must’ve been that the rear brakes needed to self adjust. Now I just have to figure out why it’s pulling a little to the right. And why ABS never seems to intervene.
