hey i know there was a writeup on how to change the front pads and rear shoes on a 3rd gen somewhere.
i already searched and i couldnt find it.
can anyone give me the link?

I just did my drums today and have found a shortcut. Instead of adjusting the rear shoes with the star adjuster or having your greasy hands to pull the e-brake; just use a short pry bar and "ratchet" the park brake lever on the other side of the drum. It worked really well.

got the front done today, but when i pulled off the rear drums i found i have 2 leaking axle seals.
im going to have to replace them before i put the new brakes in so they dont get messed up by the oil.
how much is it to get the rear oil seals replaced?

It aint gonna be cheap to have someone do it for you. Especially if you take it to the dealership. Seals are pretty easy if you have good directions. The only thing is you may want to have new bearings pressed on depending on how bad the leaks are. That part sucks because you have to find someone with a press and tools for the 3rd gen axle with ABS.

that was another thing wrong with mine when i got it. find someone with those tools, i had to pay my mechanic like 700 or 800 bucks to do it..not the one i have now, but the one in san diego, since he had to take it to a special shop .

A Toyota Master Tech told me that it's extremely rare for the axle bearings to go out on the 3rd gen 4Runners. And surprisingly that was with me standing at the dealership with an axle in hand (they could have taken me for a ride). I thought mine were bad too. All it ended up being was 2 rear axle seals at a whopping $12 each from the dealer. Took me about 45 minutes each side. The dealer wanted $700.

changed the oil seals today.
wasnt too hard took about 3 hours.
but when i was doing the rear shoes, i slipped off my pliers and my knuckle hit the lug.
cut it about an inch long and down to the bone.
8 stitches.
that sucked but the brakes work alot better now and no more gear oil all over the place
