I just had my 30k service done and they changed the brake fluid. What I notice now is that I have to press a bit harder to engage the brakes. They are still strong but not as sensitive as before. I know this is hard for you guys to guage without driving the rig but all I can say is that they are not the same as before. On the other hand, am I just being too anal? What would you guys do? Take it back or live with it for now?

 

I would take it back if the stopping distance was reduced in any way. If brake performance is good, they are going to tell you some crap like, "well the new fluid will change the brake pedal feel."

Sounds like maybe they were too soft previously, and now they seem really firm to you. Just make sure you can stop ok and it doesnt bug you too much. If it does, take it back in and demand they make it better.

Actually, I had to press down less with the original setup. Now, after the change, I have to push closer to the floor before they engage but we may be only talking a couple of inches. Maybe, I should just have them look at it again because I think we are all very in tune with our rigs. After 30k miles, the muscle memory in my leg knows exactly how much pressure I need to stop and today it is different, not bad though, just different.

 

Oh ok, I got it backwards. Well that is a different story. Sounds like someone bled them wrong. Not sure how or why they would screw that up, but you never know.

If the pedal is anywhere close to the floor, you are just asking to blow out the seals in the MC or in one or more calipers.

 

isn't a reduced (shorter) stopping distance more desirable. just kidding, I know what you meant.

I would take it back, sounds like they are spongy and need to be bled a little better. the first (and last) time the stealer did my brakes I had to take it back because I almost plunged out into traffic off the car lot because the knot-head didn't bleed them well enough, if at all. I would have thought that the little day-laborer that drove my 4runner around front would have noticed something funny but I guess I thought wrong.
