It was the day before Valentine's Day when I was still in college. I had been married 2 or 3 years I guess. We had put M/T tires on it, and had just put several hundred dollars worth of stereo equipment into it; speakers mounted low on the doors and an amp under the passenger seat.

A friend of mine and I went up in my truck (the one I still have). We had a lot of fun and were able to negotiate some pretty rough stuff. There were numerous water puddles we had to cross, so my friend would jump out, go check the depth of the puddle and check for ruts, then guide my through on the best path. We got to the last big water crossing before we got back onto pavement, less than 50 yards away. My friend jumped out, did a quick survey and, famous last words, said "Doesn't look too bad. Go for it" So, I started to move, gat about ten feet into the water, and got high centered because I went into some deep ruts that were not visible through the dirty water. We were stuck good, with the bottom seam of my driver's door canted jsut below the water line, so water started to pool in the driver's floor board. Evening was just starting to fall, and it was going to be a cold night.

We walked up the road a little to where we had seen a motorcycle rider earlier. We got there just as he was loading his bike into his truck. He had a friend with a tow truck and, for the rock bottom price of $50, he was sure the friend would pull us out:cry: (I was in college, remember?)

Anyway, by the time we got back to the truck, ice had started to form on the surface of the water, and it was COLD when I walked into it to hook up the winch line.

It was late when I got home, and my wife was near panic, because I had no way to call her. The truck was covered with mud from front to rear (I will dig out the pics and post them later). The next morning the carpet was frozen thick with ice because of all the water that came inside, but luckily it never got high enough to get into the stereo equipment.

I was so muddy that, when I got home, I undressed right inside the front door and left all my clothes in a pile. The next day I went to school and work, both 30 miles from where I lived (lived in Mt. Vernon, WA, work and school in Bellingham). Imagine my total shock when, from work, I picked up the phone to order Valentine flowers be delivered to my wife's work and, reaching into my pants pocket, realized I had left my wallett, checkbook, money, EVERYTHING, in my muddy pants at home, so I couldn't send her the flowers.

My wife cried for about a day after that, because, you know, everybody else at work got beautiful flowers and they were all teasing her because her husband "forgot". It didn't help that I had proposed to her on a Valentine's day, making it all the more special. What idiot invented Valentine's day anyway?
