battery question

i bought a optima yellow top today. installed it, and my rig wouldnt start. rather, it made an interesting noise. jumped it off, then drove it around town and such for about 10 min, then came back home. about 15 min later, tried to start it up, and had a real troublesome time. my question is, is my battery a dud? do these have to get charged when you buy them? or is this just normal operating procedure.

Sounds like you got a dud bud.

What is the cold cranking reserve # on it?
I doubt it that it would be to low for your rig.

I'd take it back and swap it for a new one.
No new battery ever needs a charge.
